Review: Rhythm & Writing with the Get Write Crew

Language Arts time turned into a party thanks to Rhythm & Writing with the Get Write Crew. Rhythm & Writing has created an alphabet writing system for young children. Their focus is building confidence through practice, engaging videos, and fun stories.

The Rhythm & Writing program features a workbook, transparency sheets, and access to instructional videos. This system connects various learning styles by providing parents, teachers, and therapists effective writing strategies to educate children. The workbook features introductory stories for the letters your child will be learning to write and practice pages. The transparency sheets can be placed over the workbook pages so that your child can practice until they get it right. The videos do require a password to access but there are two sample videos located on the website.

Instructional Videos
The basis behind Rhythm & Writing is introducing each letter through a fun music video. These videos feature the Get Write Crew and lyrics that repeatedly explain how to correctly write each letter. Each crew member has their own unique talent and style. This makes watching them just as fun as learning the information. Each song features its own unique lyrics, song style, and has a catchy presence. Music is a fun way for everyone to learn no matter their age. It is also one of the easiest ways to get our brain to process and store information. It would be nice if the company incorporated an app option so these videos can be enjoyed more frequently. The children often requested to listen to these songs while we were cleaning or doing artwork.

Workbook & Transparency Sheets
In the front of the workbook, you’ll find a detailed introduction about the Rhythm & Writing company as well as notes for teaching with their product. Next, you’ll find the pre-assessment page where your child will practice writing all the letters in the alphabet. From there you’ll be able to look over their technique and see what letters they know, what you need to review, and what you need to teach. As you work through the program, you will help your child correctly form letters. The transparency sheets can be used to cover up the workbook page so your child can practice more than once. These can easily be wiped clean with a damp cloth or baby wipe. Letter review pages and a post-assessment can be found in the back of the workbook.

Each letter group begins with a story that explains what is going on in the picture. From there, they practice how to correctly write the letters. Each page also shows examples of things that start with that letter of the alphabet. The illustrations placed throughout this book are not the best. I do feel like the characters in the workbook should look like the characters on the cover. This was a bit confusing for my son and a major concern for me because there was not any uniformity throughout the program. Rather than having them redrawn altogether, maybe putting some of the inside character illustrations in color will make the pictures and connection clearer.

Final Thoughts
We used this program every day for approximately two months. We would play the video to introduce or review the writing method and then subsequently practice with the workbook. Initially, I let my son use the transparency sheet during practice time but occasionally it would slip causing him to mark the page. To correct this issue, I opted to purchase a dry erase protector from Dollar Tree. This allowed me to easily place the workbook inside of it so none of the pages were written on with the marker. We found that being consistent in practice is extremely important during this process. The inclusion of the transparency sheets allowed Bam Bam to practice continually until he felt confident.

The Rhythm & Writing program was designed by an Occupational Therapist so the care and attention to writing detail are noted throughout. I like how each letter is broken down into separate steps within the workbook and built upon as your child learns. The same steps are constantly repeated throughout the music so that they can easily be committed to memory. I often found on my younger children humming the tunes as they practiced writing. I do think that the songs paired with the workbook are a good combination that makes learning fun. Other than updating the workbook graphics, there is nothing that I would change about this product. We enjoyed our time using Rhythm & Writing with the Get Write Crew and I plan to use this with my younger daughter as well.
