Today’s review features a detailed look at His Vessel Textbooks – Algebra 1. We’ve been using this for Bear’s 9th Grade math course. Mary C. Carroll created this course with the Christian Homeschool family in mind. While homeschooling her children she noticed the lack of God in math. Due to the multitude of math applications in the Bible, she felt that God must have a lot to say about this topic. Therefore Mary tied in Biblically-based concepts and Scripture within each math lesson.
Each Algebra 1 unit begins with a God Moment passage from Scripture that helps introduce the concept. The objectives, vocabulary terms, and helpful hints are next. As your child works through the book you’ll find practice exercises, review questions, as well as a concluding family activity that encourages connection and spiritual growth. Each unit ends with an Expressions Project where students formulate algebraic expressions for Scripture passages that reference math. A glossary, answer key, references, formula charts, and an index are located in the back of the book.

So far, Bear has happily participated in this His Vessel Textbooks – Algebra 1 course. The key to success with this program is allowing your child to work through this textbook at their own pace. Bear worked through two or three lessons a week and I added supplements to review from time to time. The colorful illustrations, detailed examples, and the inclusion of scripture are my favorite parts of this book. The family activities help ensure parents help their children understand the material. This entire His Vessel Textbooks course is easy-to-use and even the challenges build confidence. We will be continuing this Algebra 1 course for the remainder of Bear’s freshman year.
