The Reading Game, 2nd Edition is a learn to read program designed to aid in teaching word families, sentence structure, and vocabulary. This game was created by Kenneth Hodkinson, the author of the popular Wordly Wise vocabulary series and “The Magic Stories” language arts supplement. Based on Mr. Hodkinson’s history, you can rest assured that plenty of care, concern, and tested technique was put into creating The Reading Game, 2nd Edition.
The program was designed in six levels that teach 30 new words within 1-2 weeks of consistent play. The levels are color-coded and coordinate with stories about a specific animal. The program begins with Skunk’s tale of being teased and rejected for not having a white stripe in Book 1. After reading the book, you use the small Memory Cards to match with each other in sets of 5 words. This is done by playing the familiar, card memory game from our childhood.
Learn how it works by watching this!
Next, you build on those memorized words by having your child read the coordinating grouped Captioned Flash Cards. Your child will read the memorized words shown in these sentences. Using the Captioned Flash Cards also introduces sentence structure and punctuation. This process repeats until memory card games five and six are completed successfully. After learning all 30 words, you move on to Snake’s tale in Book 2 and repeat each step.
As your child repeats this process, new words are being stored in their long-term memory. Eventually, a Memory Card or Caption Flash Card game that took 10 minutes will become more fast-paced and a new winner will emerge in seconds. Free worksheets are also available to assess your child’s knowledge throughout the program You can use these before, during, and after to reinforce what was covered and build reading confidence.

OUR ROUTINE & FINAL THOUGHTS:
I used this game with Princess three times a week. She worked through the first three stages rather quickly before feeling challenged. She did not get bored playing the game or repeating the process with harder words. Though we did not use the free worksheets, I did look over them and think they are a great resource.
The Reading Game, 2nd Edition can be used repeatedly with multiple children over the years because no workbooks are needed to use the program. I was happy that the products were of good quality and feel confident that they will last for years. However, I do think the graphics on the book covers should be updated. Princess had trouble deciphering some of the animals. I appreciated that the box included slats to store the cards once they were opened. I would have preferred a small box to help keep the cards together when the box is stored upright. A few times we opened the box and the cards spilled out so, I just placed a rubber band around each pack to help with that. Lastly, I was happy that this was a game where my older children could lead the play while my younger children learned.

This is more than a game, but a program designed to remove the stress from learning to read. Teaching your children to understand reading techniques, punctuation, sentence structure, and more are taught by using The Reading Game, 2nd Edition by Allsaid & Duun, LLC. We recommend this product for families with children that know the alphabet, are struggling with reading, or older children that need to build their confidence in reading pronunciation and comprehension.
