Christian Missionaries: Where Geography & Bible Study Meet!

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Today’s review features a detailed look at the Mary Slessor: Forward Into Calabar book and Unit Study Curriculum Guide by YWAM Publishing. This book is a part of their Christian Heroes Then & Now series. All books within this series are available as physical books, audiobooks, or e-books that can be downloaded from the website. The unit study is only available via download from the website.

The Christian Heroes: Then & Now biography series chronicles the lives of missionaries across the globe. These men and women trusted in God through life-threatening, challenging, and gruesome situations, and their efforts of fortitude were not in vain. Each story is exciting, deeply touching, and encourages Believers at all levels of faith to press towards the mark for the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).

Mary Slessor: Forward Into Calabar shares the life of a strong woman working hard to share the gospel with tribes in Africa’s Calabar region. During her life from 1848 to 1915, Mary left Scotland and followed her heart for ministry as a missionary. For nearly 40 years she labored through sickness, danger, untimely weather conditions, and people’s opinions to win the hearts of Africa’s Calabar region. In the end, she’d obtained their love, favor, and the sweet title of “White Ma” to local tribes. Mary will forever be remembered for her pioneering spirit, strong faith, and brilliant heart of servanthood.

The authors also created a Unit Study Curriculum Guide for each book. These unit studies are a separate purchase that includes permission to reproduce pages so only one is needed in your homeschool. A detailed Overview Guide explains how parents can use the study in their homeschool. The lessons teach and review creative writing, drama, movie critiquing, reading comprehension, essay writing, history, and geography concepts. Each study has a variety of activities so you can select the ones that fit your child’s learning style or interests. Bible passages are also included to use alongside this unit study. All the verses are conveniently provided in both the King James and the New International Version. Each chapter also includes four review questions for the book. These vocabulary, factual, comprehension, and open-ended interpretation questions are designed for students to review and encourage discussion.

Overall, we enjoyed listening to Mary Slessor: Forward into Calabar via Hoopla. Though we received a physical copy for the review, my children prefer the audiobooks of the Christian Heroes Then & Now series. The Unit Study Curriculum Guide pairs well with the book, and the activities are great for children in 5th to 8th grade. You can purchase Mary Slessor: Forward Into Calabar or other books within the Christian Heroes Then & Now series in-store or online via the YWAM Publishing website.
