Reading Eggs 2020! *New Features*

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

This week’s review features an updated tour of the Reading Eggs educational website and app by Blake eLearning Inc. With our 1-year subscription to the program, we received access to many new features within Reading Eggs and Mathseeds.

Reading Eggs is an award-winning program that includes games, lessons, rewards, books, and other resources that teach literacy readiness to children ages 2 to 13 years old. Each part of the website was carefully designed for young children to enjoy a self-paced daily reading routine. The lessons use colorful animation, fun characters, songs, and rewards to keep children motivated. This animated and interactive journey begins with a placement quiz to ensure your child is starting at the correct reading level. From there, as your child completes one-on-one lessons and activities until they finish a lesson map. An assessment test is given at the at the end of each map for review so you know they understand that concept. Rewards are also earned during their trek and can be used in other parts of the program.

Your child’s progress is available to you at any time via detailed reports showcasing what has been completed, comprehension, and areas of improvement. You can also download corresponding activity worksheets for additional practice. Reading Eggs’ overall goal is comprehension so they have included access to over 2500 children’s e-books. Each book also ends with a comprehension quiz that assesses their understanding.

Reading Eggs covers:
  • Phonics – introducing each letter alone and practicing the sound
  • Fluency – word recognition skills and sight words by reading books from the online library
  • Phonemic awareness – listening skills that help improve speech and guide learning the importance of syllables, phonemes, sounds in creating words
  • Vocabulary – learning and practicing new words
  • Comprehension – reading with clarity and understanding

Fast Phonics is one of the new features available to help children ages 5 and up. This program helps children learn all 26 letters of the alphabet and all 44 sounds in English. This is a fast-paced program that also reinforces reading and spelling skills while teaching a variety of words to your child. Monthly Themes are another new component that offers visual variety and limited edition rewards like clothing and furniture. While perfecting their reading foundation, your child may learn underwater one month or in a Winter Wonderland the next.

Mathseeds teaches math concepts and problem-solving skills to children ages 3 to 9 years old. These are self-paced lessons with a variety of achievement rewards for completion. Each new concept is modeled by one of the five main characters and then they practice the new skill with different activities. Early lessons focus on counting, shape recognition, and numbers. As your child builds their skills they move on to addition, subtraction, measurement, early multiplication, and division. Each lesson ends with a concept based e-book to reinforce what was learned. These books can be narrated or read independently based on your child’s reading level.

Mental Minute is a brand new area within Mathseeds designed to build fluency with quick recall of basic math facts. Each attempt only takes a minute! These are reminiscent of the quick math worksheets I would do with my class as a child. There are over 100 timed sessions that gradually increase in difficulty as your child progresses. This portion is solely focused on achieving mastery of the concepts in a new, challenging way.

OUR ROUTINE & FINAL THOUGHTS We began this journey with Reading Eggs having Princess take a new placement test. From there, she worked through the program approximately four times a week during which she spent time using the new programs and incentives as well. She enjoyed earning the golden eggs and using them to buy rewards to update her house. She also liked the new pets in Mathseeds and always made sure I printed each certificate as it was earned at the end of a map. I was happy to see the updates within the program, especially the ability to have an Android app. Watching Reggie transform based on the new monthly themes and gaining the limited edition rewards definitely kept our Princess engaged. The vast amount of ebooks available is impressive and my daughter has enjoyed the ones she’s used so far. The well-placed assessments, math fluency opportunities with Mental Minute, Fast Phonics, and detailed parent reports are my favorite parts of the program. Blake eLearning Inc has provided colorful, animated, and interactive lessons, songs, and rewards with Reading Eggs. We recommend this program as a fun daily activity or reading curriculum supplement for children ages 3 to 10 years old.
