BOTW: To Disguise the Truth by Jen Turano

Wonder immediately begins within the first moments of reading To Disguise the Truth by Jen Turano as a man desiring services with the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, about a missing heiress. Local mining industrialist Arthur Livingston is working on seeking justice for his murdered friend. However, Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency refuses the case. Eunice Holbrooke realizes that her disguise may also be in trouble and her past is quickly unraveling. To protect herself, Eunice takes on a deep undercover case that brings more plot twists and revealed secrets.

Throughout the book, you’ll enjoy the twists and turns of each entanglement and troublesome situation. I enjoyed Eunice bravely confronting her past while trying to keep her loved ones out of danger. We also watch Arthur Livingston reveal his true colors but eventually redeem himself as the dashing hero we would all like him to be. From psychiatric asylums, undercover identities, the silver industry, love, heartbreak, heroes, and heroines To Disguise the Truth by Jen Turano was an exciting read! This was my first Bleecker Street novel and I hate that it is the last of the series. I did start reading the first book and have already ordered the others. Oh, and there is also a surprise twist at the end but I’m not a spoiler so I will keep it quiet.

You can find To Disguise the Truth by Jen Turano in-store or online wherever books are sold. Thank you Bethany House Fiction for the opportunity to read this book.

Goal Setting & Accountability Program for Teens

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Today’s review features a detailed look at the TRIVE goal achievement and team building program by GOZIMUS Enterprises, LLC. This program was created to help those ages 15 and older set, work towards, and accomplish their goals.

TRIVE is a 6-month program designed to help participants achieve short-term goals. Each commitment begins with a group Discovery Session where everyone shares their personal goals. Over time participants support each other towards achieving their professed 6-month goals. The program concludes with another group Review Session to assess and celebrate their achievements.

Watch the unboxing video!

Check out my favorite features:

  • TRIVE participants improve on commitment, overcoming obstacles, discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills
  • This program can be reused with multiple groups! TRIVE also works well with groups of 4 to 6; however, the program can be adapted for larger groups.
  • The program is designed with parents and family bonding in mind! Yes, TRIVE wants parents to communicate with their teens and adult children about goals. The process puts both all involved on par with each other and creates an atmosphere for meaningful conversations.
  • Motivational and reminder emails are sent throughout the 6 months to all participants. These are concise, single-page messages written from a common-sense perspective designed to push you to continue working towards your goals.

I used TRIVE concurrently with a group of teenagers and a local Women’s Ministry. I was the leader for both groups but had different goals for each one. First, I like the concept of the product and the passion for goal setting with accountability. I appreciate the sleek design of the physical items and how everything conveniently fits into a small box. The only improvements I would make are to include full-length pencils that can be used for more than one complete 6-month session. I also think the Quotables Card Deck should have a box included within the packaging. The other cards are used during the sessions but a box would help keep those organized as well. I also chose not to incorporate the candle or table setting as suggested in the instructions. I didn’t think that atmosphere would work well for the natural conversation I was trying to create with both groups.

The online accountability, leadership tips, and emails are also nice to include for reminders. These would work better for adults as I find that most teens and young adults do not check their email. If using this for a Teen, Youth, or College group I suggest a text message version of this information. I sent the information via text to the teenage group and the emails to the Women’s Ministry group. I also added a monthly call, virtual face-to-face, or in-person meeting once a month with their Coach. This provided added accountability and an opportunity to create a new or build on a current friendship. Finally, I think the Review Session should be a party or celebration rather than a meeting resembling the Discovery Session. I plan to make the end of each session a grand event. Overall I think this program might work best for families, small co-op classes, or youth groups. I think an app version of the TRIVE program by GOZIMUS Enterprises, LLC would work extremely well! This product is available for purchase directly from the TRIVE website.

Pursuing Gold: History & Critical Thinking Curriculum (review)

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Today’s review features a detailed look at Pursuing Gold: History and Critical Thinking Curriculum and Pursuing Gold book by Cynthia L Simmons and Heart of the Matter. This combination is used to teach about finances during the Civil War including counting money and budgeting. In addition, language arts and critical thinking are also covered while using this study. We received a physical copy of both the book and the curriculum.

Pursuing Gold is the first novel in the 3-part Southern Gold Series covering the tales of keeping C&R Bank on the gold standard. The gold standard is a monetary system where a country’s currency or paper money has a value directly linked to gold. Peter Chandler now has the leadership of the bank and has to solve their current economic crisis during Civil War. In an effort to save the establishment, he joins forces with Mary Beth Roper, his partner’s daughter. She has discovered counterfeit money that has been forged with Peter’s signature. With this news and the recent pressure and politics of loans of gold to the government, the pair must solve this mystery before the bank fails. This paperback book is 378 pages and has 36 chapters.

Pursuing Gold: History and Critical Thinking Curriculum is a companion guide to the book. This workbook has activities for each chapter including crossword puzzles, morse code, comprehension questions, scripture study, budgeting exercises, and much more. Not only are you learning about the financial politics during the Civil War but your child can complete the activities to understand how this war changed money in America.

Check out my favorite features:

  • My Cool Kids can answer the questions verbally so the companion study can be reused with younger children.
  • Simple format so each chapter in the novel has corresponding activities and comprehension questions in the study.
  • Learning money management in an easy-to-understand practice method aids in future financial literacy.
  • The use of both books covers several elementary and middle school subjects.

So far, we have read over half of Pursuing Gold and completed 20 chapters of the Pursuing Gold: History and Critical Thinking Curriculum. Overall, I think Cynthia L Simmons and Heart of the Matter did a good job of writing an interesting book that pairs historical fiction with the pursuit of God for hope and peace of mind. I like the plot twists within the storyline and how she included references to the financial history of America. I also liked the comprehension questions provided in the companion guide. The only addition I would include is having a lined space to write responses, teacher notes, or talking points in the companion guide. This would be helpful for people like me that read ahead and want to make notes for future lessons. I believe this set would work well for homeschool families with children in 3rd grade through 6th grade. Both books are available for purchase via Amazon.

The Wonder of Creation Children’s Devotional (BOTW)

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Today’s review features a detailed look at The Wonder of Creation: 100 More Devotions About God and Science by Indescribable Kids and Tommy Nelson Books. This devotional, written by Louie Giglio with Tama Fortner, features daily inspiration about God paired with science facts. We received a physical copy of this devotional and used it five times a week during the review period.

The Wonder of Creation: 100 More Devotions About God and Science includes 100 devotions and prayers and scientific facts. The book is hardcover with over 200 pages that include an introduction, devotions, and an index. Each devotion is one page that begins with a scripture and ends with a prayer. The text starts by introducing the concept that will be covered within the devotionals. From there, the remaining text explains the concept of how it relates to the scripture, as well as the character and power of God. Finally, an Explore the Wonder section shares more information about the daily science topic.

SCIENCE TOPICS COVERED:

  • Animals: birds, snakes, fish, and more
  • Space: black holes, volcanic moons, gamma rays, and more
  • People: anatomy, emotions, communication, and more
  • Earth: rainbow rivers, blue lava, glaciers, and more

My favorite features of this devotional include the simple text and thorough but easy-to-understand explanations. My Cool Kids also enjoyed the illustrations, scriptures, and simple prayers. Each drawn illustration made the text come alive, and the additional science photographs aided in concept comprehension. The entire book flowed well and my younger children enjoyed listening to it. Lastly, I loved the conversations that we had following each reading. After reading this five times a week for nearly two months, we believe it has been a good addition to our homeschool. We look forward to continuing using this devotional The Wonder of Creation: 100 More Devotions About God and Science by Indescribable Kids and Tommy Nelson Books until we finish it.

BOTW: In Search of A Prince by Toni Shiloh

Imagine living your life, content with joy about your future, only to find out your history and heritage were hidden. That’s how In Search of a Prince begins for Brielle Adebayo, a proud New York City public school teacher. While enjoying her annual Martha’s Vineyard summer vacation with her mother, she learns that she is actually a princess. In the island kingdom of Ọlọrọ Ilé, off the coast of Africa, her grandfather is the king. Since his health is failing Brielle is soon expected to immediately assume her royal position.

In addition to this breaking news, Brielle soon learns from the Ọlọrọ Ilé Royal Council that per an ancient edict, she must marry before her coronation. If not, the crown will be passed to another which leaves her with few options, minimal solutions, and a small time frame to get it all done. Throughout the story, Brielle is uncertain if she even wants the throne. Are all of these hoops worth it when she was happy in New York? However, despite these confusing circumstances, she has to be courageous, crafty, and confident while she searches for her Prince Charming.

I thought Toni Shiloh did a wonderful job of pairing mystery with romance throughout In Search of A Prince. First, the cover is COMPLETELY GORGEOUS from the color scheme to the backdrop, and the lovely model. I also enjoyed Brielle’s honesty while processing every piece of news yet she didn’t run from the challenge. Every character, the many perils, and the thoughts about her decisions will have you fully engulfed in this modern-day fairytale of a novel. You can find In Search of a Prince by Toni Shiloh in-store or online wherever books are sold. Thank you Bethany House Fiction for the opportunity to read this book.

Hide the Word in Your Heart with The Bible Memory App

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Today’s review features a detailed look at The Bible Memory App – Bible Memory PRO by BibleMemory.com. This system helps you practice, review, and master scripture memory.  We received a PRO License for this product which is a one-time purchase that will not expire. During the review period, we used the app as a family to memorize Psalm 100 and Jude.

The Bible Memory App is a system that helps you choose, memorize, organize, and review verses. This app can be accessed on all mobile devices or via the BibleMemory.com website. With their 3-step memorization process, a committed heart, and will to learn, you can master memorization and hide the word in your heart.

Let’s take a look at this scripture memorization process!

  1. Choose your preferred version of the Bible. This app currently has options for over 10 translations, including KJV, Amplified, NIV, NKJV, NASB, and CSB.
  2. Add scripture to your My Verses page by picking specific passages or categories.
  3. Begin 3-step Memorization Process: Type It, Memorize It, and Master It. While working through the process, you will type the verse several times, fill in missing words, and receive corrections for any mistakes made. You can also draw pictures, use flashcards, or record verses to practice. **Recording feature is available for PRO accounts only.**
  4. Repeat activities until a red checkmark appears beside the verse or collection once you’ve mastered it.
  5. Review the mastered scripture via daily or weekly e-mail reminders.

As a family, we used this app to memorize the book of Jude and Psalm 100. I also created an account for my husband and our oldest son to use at their leisure. With The Bible Memory App – Bible Memory PRO, you can create 4 accounts for family members. I liked the easy use of the app, the variety of translations offered, and the practice activities that help you memorize the scripture. Another favorite feature of mine is that all of my progress syncs between devices. I used this program at home, on my work laptop, and even on the beach while on vacation. I have found this program to be a fun, easy-to-use addition to my daily Bible study. My family also enjoyed working together to memorize scripture.  I recommend The Bible Memory App – Bible Memory PRO by BibleMemory.com for individual use, church leadership gifts, and for Sunday School teachers to try in their classroom.
