WORLD Watch: 10-minute News Videos for Christian Families

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Today’s review features a detailed look at the WORLD Watch online news program. We received an online 6-month subscription for the whole family to view the daily WORLD Watch news program. This subscription provides ten-minute shows for every weekday of the year. All shows are accessible on the website and can also be cast to a compatible television.

WORLD Watch has been sharing Christian worldview news with students since 1981. Their unique approach provides the familiarity of a local newscast featuring a Believer’s point of view on current events. Each episode is a ten-minute video that includes feature stories, headlines, and news briefs. The stories are informative but keep you interested while educating you.

This program works well with any schedule because you can watch the videos at anytime throughout the day. I used them to start our mornings, played during lunch, and even assigned them as homework for Bear. WORLD Watch also sends out an email update every morning with an outline of the stories. Our favorite newscasts to date were about the history behind Labor Day, dinosaur auction, learning about the NIL action for collegiate athletes.

We watched the WORLD Watch newscast daily during our school week. The program was easy to access and cast to our television; however, an app would be really helpful so I did not have to login in every few days. Bear enjoys the program because it delivers the information in short clips that he can view at his leisure. I appreciate that the stories include top news from all over the world. I am also grateful for a newscast that reminds me of Channel One from my middle school days. Giving my teenager that memory has been a great addition to our homeschool routine. We recommend this online news subscription for families with children in 3rd grade and up.

Logic Lessons for Life! The Fallacy Detective Book Review

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Today’s review features a detailed look at The Fallacy Detective by Nathaniel Bluedorn and Hans Bluedorn. We received a paperback copy of this 264 paged book and used it with our 8th grader, Bear. The Fallacy Detective: Thirty-Eight Lessons on How to Recognize Bad Reasoning book was created to be used with students ages 13 and up.

PRODUCT DETAILS:
The Fallacy Detective: Thirty-Eight Lessons on How to Recognize Bad Reasoning was written over 15 years ago to introduce Logic into middle and high school education in-home or classroom settings. An error in logic, commonly referred to as a fallacy, points out where someone has made a mistake in their thinking. This book takes a step-by-step approach to educating parents on how to teach their children to recognize those errors. All 36 lessons start with a reading passage and end with exercises to complete. Illustrations are also included throughout the book of familiar cartoons along with other art that coincides with the lessons. The Fallacy Detective Game and an Answer Key are also located at the back of the book.

Nathaniel Bluedorn and Hans Bluedorn also took a lot of time to ensure this book could be used to teach at home around the dinner table, in homeschool, a co-op classroom, as well as in public, private, or charter school settings. The lessons are easy-to-use with detailed examples and activities that vary in difficulty to challenge all participants. Each lesson builds upon the previous one, so you grow reasoning skills daily. Those same skills can also be instantly applied as your teen converses with peers at home, school, church, or work.

OUR ROUTINE & FINAL THOUGHTS
My husband and Bear worked through this book each evening after their Proverbs study. They allowed their natural conversation to flow along with each topic without setting a time limit for the evening’s activity. It was also fun to watch them play both sides and try to stump each other. They also used our subscription to WORLD Watch News videos for extra material to practice with.

Overall, The Fallacy Detective: Thirty-Eight Lessons on How to Recognize Bad Reasoning by Nathaniel Bluedorn and Hans Bluedorn has been a great addition to our homeschool. We recommend The Fallacy Detective to families ready to teach Logic to their teenagers. We encourage our children to step outside the mold and be courageous in all efforts. Learning to substantiate an argument logically is key in crushing that mold and building good thinking skills.

Learn & Recall with Math Essentials Speed Wheel Drills

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Math Essentials has created a powerful library of books to aid in teaching, learning, and reviewing concepts. Today’s review features a detailed look at the Speed Wheel Drills for Addition, Speed Wheel Drills for Division, and Speed Wheel Drills for Multiplication books. Each book is available for purchase via Amazon.

PRODUCT DETAILS:
We received a physical copy of the
Speed Wheel Drills for Addition, Speed Wheel Drills for Division, and Speed Wheel Drills for Multiplication books. Each book is 140 pages and designed to help your child practice and recall the math facts commonly used in higher-level subjects. To properly use these books you will need a writing utensil and a timer. The books begin with a helpful guide sharing instructions on how to use the Speed Wheels. Next, is a double-sided page displaying 21 Important Math Tips, penned by the award-winning author, Richard W. Fisher.

A Resource Center is located in the back of each book which houses information that will benefit your child for many years. The six-page glossary houses math terms, definitions, and a few examples. A page showing examples and names of math symbols as well as multiplication, addition, and division tables are also included. A chart featuring squares, square roots, fractions with decimal equivalents, and a large answer key complete this resource area.

The Speed Wheel Drills for Addition, Speed Wheel Drills for Division, and Speed Wheel Drills for Multiplication books are all designed exactly the same, with the exception of practicing different concepts. Each speed wheel has 12 numbers to practice adding, multiplying, or dividing by the middle number. A space for grading and marking time is also provided. There are multiple wheels on each page but your child can work through as many as they feel comfortable with. Tracking the time helps them improve their retention and accuracy as the practice continues.

Fun Facts about Speed Wheel Drills:

  • 1,440 Speed Wheel Drills
  • Helps improve grades
  • Track progress of recall and retention
  • Great for various ages and grades

OUR ROUTINE & FINAL THOUGHTS

We used each book throughout the past weeks as we began our new school year. Bam Bam used the beginning of the addition book while Bear used the multiplication and division books. I decided to include them throughout the week as fun warm-up activities, “to get our brain juices flowing and going,” as I always say. The concept for completing the speed drills was easy to understand for both my 2nd grader and 8th grader. They found the wheels to be a creative way to practice their skills and work on recalling those frequently used math techniques.

After using these books for several weeks, we highly recommend the
Speed Wheel Drills for Addition, Speed Wheel Drills for Division, andSpeed Wheel Drills for Multiplication books. Math Essentials has designed a creative, safe self-competition-styled way to practice math facts.

Help Your Kids Learn and Love The Bible by Danika Cooley

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Have you ever read a book that provides confirmation about your process and ideas? If not, Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible by Danika Cooley, presented by Bethany House Publishers will leave you feeling encouraged and empowered! Today’s review features a breakdown of this book and ways to incorporate the ideas presented.

PRODUCT DETAILS:

We received a physical copy of Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible by Danika Cooley. This book is divided into three parts, each focusing on ways to empower you to teach scripture to your children. Part 1: You’re the Leader offers parents insight into the importance of Biblical literacy. You learn how to make lessons approachable that create meaningful conversations about what they are learning. She also does a great job of explaining ways to teach the Bible to younger children and even has tips to keep your middle and high school students engaged. Details for establishing a Bible study routine individually, as well as with your family are also provided.

Part 2: Faithful Reading discusses using a variety of resources and building your personal library. I enjoyed how she provided examples of ways to explain hard topics in the Bible like slavery, crucifixion, and the chastisement of Christians. She also encouraged parents to not avoid those hard subjects or questions that come when they are learning about them. It is important that all believers even young children learn how to address hard things so that we can help heal the heart things.

Part 3: A Daily Walk explains why it is so important to read the word together with your family no matter how young or old you are. Memorizing scripture is also necessary for Christians because it helps us to hide the word in our hearts so that we do not sin against God. (Psalm 119:11) Our family devotional time should also end in prayer which allows each child to verbally speak out and talk to God and they also grow their personal prayer life.

OUR ROUTINE & FINAL THOUGHTS

I read through this book on my own and was so grateful that I was already doing everything that she suggested. Moments like these are so comforting because it lets me know that when you pray and seek God for guidance on how to run your house in every way He will provide confirmation. Because I enjoyed this book so much I do plan on gifting it to several friends who have younger children and are beginning their parenting journey.

My favorite thing about this book is how Danika encourages less formal family bible study which allows conversations to flow naturally. She does a great job of encouraging more interactions from parents while emploring them to be intentional about teaching biblical and gospel events. Spending time in the word with your family will help offer guidance for managing children’s behaviors, life challenges, and our reactions to the world around us. It is truly important to develop good spiritual habits in our lives, and our children can start now!

Leading our children through scripture is an essential part of Christian parenting. Now, Bethany House Publishers has made studying God’s word as a family quick and easy with Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible by Danika Cooley. If we take our job as parents seriously we should include time to share faith, scripture, and salvation with our children.
